What is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is the planned and creative use of music to attain and maintain health and well being by addressing a person's social, mental or physical needs. It focuses on therapeutic aims, as opposed to entertainment or educational aims.

Music Therapists are proficient musicians who can use music as a tool for communication and change. They often work for organisations including hospitals, aged care facilities, special education schools, and can assist with a wide range of emotional, social, and psychological issues.

A Registered Music Therapist is an allied health professional who has been trained at an accredited university in music, psychology, counselling and related areas. A Registered Music Therapist is bound by the code of professional conduct and ethics and the continuing Professional Development requirements of the Australian Music Therapy Association Inc. (AMTA).
